A Tapestry Of Memories Poem by Ruta Mohapatra

A Tapestry Of Memories

Rating: 4.7

Red cornices over a cream house
Inside a couple and five children
Weaving a tapestry of memories
To carry on their journey forward

Plumes of smoke from the kitchen
Clanging of vessels and ladles
Wafts of mouth watering smell
Old melodies in a soft voice

Laughter and arguments
Fights and reconciliation
A firm voice keeping control
The protector, the provider

Fragrant honeysuckle leaning
Between the gatepost and coconut tree
Pink, white, bunches of flowers
The delicate scent pervading

Green guavas with pink centers
Close to the balcony for plucking
With bare hands, succulent, sweet
Rising from creamy white flowers

Near its trunk the bushes of jasmine
Thick bottle green leaves and
Scented little white flowers shining
Stars on the ground under the moon

Boughs of the mango tree
Screening the kitchen window
Where the cuckoo sings
Every spring and early summer

The heart aches to go back
To the cocoon of security
To that blanket of love
Still giving strength to go on
