I really think that we all think
We'd like to get along.
I also think that I am right,
Which means I think that you are wrong.
As soon as you admit that fact,
I'm sure we can proceed.
With me expressing my demands,
To help you meet my needs.
Your list of wants is lengthy,
And my list of needs is long.
Aware am I that you might think,
To choose to disagree.
But I must persist and list
What you must do to succour me
When you protest you've had no rest
In ceaseless search of peace.
Can I reply “it’s you, not I,
That's bent on self increase”?
I think you tie yourself in knots,
Not letting me be free.
I think I could give a little,
But you know I have my pride.
And you have yours, and both are hurt,
And both are deep and wide.
It's far more complicated,
Than it ever was before.
I am wanting more and more,
Whilst you want more and more.
There is therefore no middle ground
To give between our sides
I see you're picking up a gun
To emphasise your point.
Let me get mine and show it you
By way of a retort
You’re loading it, you're serious?
Well I am serious too.
You are pointing it at me?
Well, I'm pointing mine at you.
I think you’ll find that we’re both
Far more serious than we thought
You're friends are coming? They are armed?
Well, I also have some friends? .
My friends are greater than your friends!
We'll see where this thing ends!
Your gun’s a rocket? Well, mine’s a plane!
I’ll shoot your plane to hell!
I’ll bomb your house! You’ve shot my son!
I’ve shot your son as well!
We might say peace, we might mean peace
But we know that peace “depends”.
I’ll conscript all my young now
and you enlist yours too.
We’ll throw them at each other and we’ll see what that will do.
Then you and I can sit and talk in chairs and chew the fat
And all the things we argued for?
Our kids can see to that.
Will they know what they’re fighting for?
That’s up to us to do.
Tell your kids it’s me they hate,
And I’ll make mine hate you.
