A Time-Worn Photograph Poem by Susan Williams

A Time-Worn Photograph

Rating: 5.0

.
a time-worn photograph
sitting on the mantel
gathering dust....
fading away...
.
it's like an oil painting
except painted in black-and-white words
etched into lines of the old faces
and captured forever in the hopeful eyes of the young
.
the dusty picture from a long long time ago
sitting forgotten on the mantel
whispering its stories to the empty room
singing softly its songs of love and life into the night
.
yearning always yearning
yearning for someone to know these people lived
yearning for someone to care
a picture deserted and despairing
.
maybe
I should take that portrait with me
no one else is reading the picture painted in words
that was their life.
.

Such a beautiful poem. Full of static emotions frozen in time. " whispering its stories to the empty room" , or maybe spreading its story, to the passing of the time, and present it to the future. Great work. Thanks for sharing..

Amir- I thank you for taking time to read and comment- tis a thoughtful thing to do for another struggling writer to give them an idea of what works for the reader! ! ! ! ! !

A marvelous poem! I have given it five stars and added it to my favorites. Countless times I have seen old photographs and wondered about the people in them and the untold stories that they could have shared.

You've given us a glimpse into the depth of life's soul, the message that it is more than our own present moments, it is all inclusive, of every moment, all going together into the future of the Yet-To-Be!

I tried to write much more, but for some ignorant reason this website cuts off at will, deleting everything. I love this poem Susan! ! !

This covers me like a soft blanket of smooth melancholy, sweet and warm, yet somehow sorrowful.
