A Tour Of My Bookcase. Poem by Michael Walker

A Tour Of My Bookcase.

Rating: 5.0

The mahogany bookcase stands by the wall
divided into five shelves in all
and dominated by nonfiction: biography,
philosophy, history, true crime, just three novels.

There are books on Steve Jobs on the top shelf
since he started personal computers:
The top shelf was always his standard,
and he expected the same from staff.

On the lowest shelf are coffee table books
about musicians, sportsmen and women,
which rely on photos for appeal,
alongside serious. atlases and dictionaries.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I get out library books, but also buy my own books, which are on the
shelf. I record most of them.
Once I owned nearly all novels, French and English. That was from my student days and afterwards. Recently I tried to read 'The Da Vinci Code', by Dan Brown, but gave up about halfway through.
The four books about Steve Jobs on the top shelf are:
'Steve Jobs', by Walter Isaacson.(the definitive biography I think) .
'I, Steve. Steve Jobs in his Own Words', edited by George Beahm.
' The Bite in the Apple. A Memoir of My Life With Steve Jobs', by Chrisann Brennan.
' Steve Jobs. The Man Who Thought Different', by Karen Blumenthal.

Michael, We both love books. You have your library very well organized. I have over 3000 books in my basement. I try to group them by subject. About 500 chess books, then many on the American Civil War, Utah history and what ever else catches my eye. To My Poem List and rate another " 10"

You have many more books than me. I organise my books into types, so that I can find them easily. It is like a mini-library. I don't know how many books I have sold, or given away. I am interested in the Civil War also.

Poetry books occupy the middle shelf, being between fiction and nonfiction or both in the same poem. If a poet writes about himself, as Frank O'Hara did, it should be true and not fiction as far as possible.....so impressive. Beautiful poem on your bookcase. Thanks for sharing.

I have noticed that your poems are mostly true, nonfiction. A safe way to write I think.

You have noticed the main point, thanks so much. Is poetry fiction or nonfiction?

Great passion that you have for books is on display in this poem. Your bookcase also shows a character. Thanks for taking the reader along for an introduction to your favourite books, authors and artists. I too have a similar library at home spread into two bigger bookcases and two smaller cases but finding a particular book becomes tedious sometimes.

Thanks again. I revised the version which you probably saw. I hope it is better.
