A Waist Is A Terrible Thing To Mind

Rating: 5.0

Just once a week, my group makes stops
at doughnut shops,
where we partake
of things that make
us fatter still, but we don't care;
it's our affair.
One little taste
can't hurt my waist.
Then comes the scene that hurts for sure:
the clothing store,
where each one tries
a larger size.

This poem was entered in the NFSPS (National Federation of State Poetry Societies)
2018 contest and took third place in Category 33: Minute Award.
A "Minute" poem has exactly 60 syllables and has to follow a specific pattern.
There are twelve lines. Lines One, Five, and Nine must each contain eight syllables and all other lines must contain four syllables each. The rhyme pattern is aabbccddeeff.
I had never seen nor heard of a Minute Poem before this contest and this is still the only one I have ever written.

Note: in 2019, I again took third place in the Minute Poem category of the NFSPS contests with my poem 'Wishful Fishing'. In 2020, the poem that I submitted did not place.

One little taste can't hurt my waist.... //.... True, until you need a larger size of apparel to put on. Lovely poem with a lovelier picture on obesity and obese. Thanks.
