An Old Man's Story Poem by michael Smajda

An Old Man's Story

Rating: 5.0

Oh, I wasn't always this old, Whipper Snapper.
There was a time when I was just as young as you.
There was a time I, too, played with baby toys.
A time, I played sports in high school, too.

It was there I first experienced a true high school crush.
And from there directly went joining the working force.
And not long after receiving my first pay check,
I met and married my lovely sweetheart without remorse.

Throughout the years, we gave birth to several children.
Our children, likewise, gave birth to a few youngsters too.
For years, now, we have been referred to as just grandparents.
But pretty soon, we'll be known as great-grandparents, anew.

Of course, we have had our share of misfortunes.
Yet, no matter what, there has never been a single doubt
We were put on this earth to serve our Creator.
And this is what we believed our life was all about.

When you are young, you have no reason to look backward.
And when you're old, you have no reason to look ahead.
But what you do realize is just how fast time does fly by.
There is no more to be done. There is no more to be said.

So, what I learned from growing old, Whipper Snapper,
That you may want to pass along to all of your friends,
Is this, enjoy every bit of life God should grant you.
As I discovered, life only goes on till it ends.
