Angelic Poem by Daniel Brick

Angelic

Keeping faithful watch
for angels, I have become one.
But my wings are folded.

Sometimes a breeze lifts
a few feathers. Some loosen
and float into blue air.

The rest press tighter
against my body. I cannot
release them, no matter

what image of flight
crosses my mind. I wait
under October's leafless trees

to hear the awful beating
of my guardian's huge wings.
Only then will I see

my other face, radiant
and calm. Only then
will I be able to spread

my prisoned wings, rise
in silent imitation
and know the angel's endless flight.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Angels appear in some of my poems. Sometimes they come uninvited and surprise me. Other times I summon them, as in this poem.I find angels to be a convenient symbol (perhaps too convenient) of human aspirations, or of possible evolution to a higher state of consciousness. Actually, I do not have any belief in angels as existent beings. In that sense, they can only be symbols to me, but they are potent and resonant symbols. Wallace Stevens has a poem, 'Angel Surrounded by Paysans', in which the Angel speaks: 'I am the necessary angel of earth, /Since, in my sight, you see the earth again, /Cleared of its stiff and stubborn, man-locked set....' Precisely, the angel embodies the higher mind which sees beyond the normal, limited mind, and summons us to fulfill a higher purpose. In this poem, I see a person whose maturation or self-development has stalled for some reason; the potential is there (the wings) but it's not released (prisoned wings) . The arrival of the guardian angel is the catalyst which does release the trapped energy, and the endless flight is the life the person should be living and now will be living. Of course, if someone who has a religious faith, particularly Christian, wants to take this poem literally, and see the transformation as the effect of God's grace and blessing, that is perfectly fine with me. And for those who do, I am delighted I could give you the words and images that your religious beliefs animated.

I like your image of an angel as representing our higher consciousness of mind and inspiration. You as a poet an angelic figure to many.

Angels play a surprisingly big role in 20th century poetry but they are not orthodox figures. The most powerful evocation, even terrifying are Rilke's in DUINO ELEGIES and Rafael Alberti's CONCERNING THE ANGELS. But I don't intend anything like their images. My angel as you saw clearly is a gentle, humane presence. And of this type of angel there are any examples living among us!

I, too spread my prisoned wings and rise in imitation. For I know I am one of many to praise you as a poet, but you are truly a inspiration to me. Thank you :)

I can look upon this poem from a religious angle and as a symbolic representation. A person whose inner strength rests within dormant, like an angel with folded wings is incapable of flight! Only by summoning the hidden powers, like a wizard he can bring his potential to the fore and create magic. If we go for the the other interpretation and of thedivine powers ascribed to an arch angel, I believe that our cosciousness can be broadened to manifold dimensions only with the grace of a divine power! A poem deep and profound!

I love poems about angels and sometimes write about them myself. This is a must for my favorite poems.

A superb angelic poem. I believ angels exist as a matter of fact and they record in writing what we do. But there are humans who are as gud as angels. And tinytots are angels too. So kudos poet for yor imaginative take. I hope u review my latest poem too.
