As I Read Your Words, A Prayer Poem by Glen Kappy

As I Read Your Words, A Prayer

To be accompanied by upright bass

As I read
your words
let them sink
deeper
than the regions
where I think
and settling
at my heart's
bottom

Let them
remain there
effervescing
upwards
bearing truth
in steady stream
to where
I think and do

Let your words
in my heart
continually abide
guiding me
as in one direction
they must lead
in you
and towards you

The prayerful recognition of personal frailty, the humble request for guidance from beyond oneself, and the expressed desire to press on toward the Divine, despite our propensity to sink into darkness if left to our own devices. A luminous and enlightened prayer, my friend.

thank you, neal. propensity- a good word, a descriptive word. i think of paul's own struggle as he describes it in romans 7. yes, we need to stay close to something so we stay close to God... and it just strikes me- a line i love from ps 103- God knows we're dust, as a father has pity on his children, so God on us. -glen

What an amazing poem! You first received a poem from your friend which you thoroughly appreciated and placed in a deep secure place in your heat, BUT THEN that poem begins a dialogue with you in changing circumstances and a response to your changing needs. It has taken in the role of another conscience, a moral guardian within that is alert to your needs without.

thank you much, daniel, for the strong affirmation of this poem. as it happened, the book that was in mind at the time was the bible- which i continue to dip into almost daily. but in addition it could have been for me hafez or issa (i'm reading them again now) or walter hilton's scale of perfection... we need, i need, something to remind me of who i want to be- i think of the example of the two dogs inside us- the one we feed is the one that grows. i definitely want to starve the bitter, mean, angry one. -glen
