Beginnings Poem by Reva Kern

Beginnings

In a California garden
A kaleidoscope of color
Dazzles the eye
As the herbs of Rosemary
Thyme and Sage
Mixed with Garlic and
sweet Lavender
Tantalize the senses
With a salad
Of seductive scents.
The Tea Trees
In colors of
Rose and white
Encircle blooming buds
In pale pinks
Of Scottish Heather
And the Potato Vine
Of fleecy flowers
Entwines the Trumpet
While the Lilac
Bursts forth
In plenteous purple.
For here,
Where drought-tolerant
Varieties prevail and
Profusions of petals
Appear with winter rains
Perhaps
There is a lesson
To be learned
From the renewal
Of this garden
In a season
Associated with endings,
That the winter
Of our lives
May, in reality
Be just one
Of unknown beginnings.
