Beware Of The Enemy Who Smiles Poem by Marama Kelly

Beware Of The Enemy Who Smiles

Rating: 4.5

My heart grew heavy that day long ago
When I thought in you a friend who was true
I believed you were honest, someone to trust
A friend who would help me whenever I got stuck

But life has a way of showing us all
The true heart hidden behind the false wall
The smiles that were bright hid schemes unknown
While the friendly gestures held evil new sown

You were the sister I always wished for
The one who was older full of wisdom of lore
You showed me so much about life, how to live
I was so happy, to you I would give

I treated your children as if they were mine
I cleaned up your house, off the floors we could dine
You gave me so much with the friendship you shared
Doing your chores did reward me, endeared

To help you through trouble so you could stand tall
was a joy that erupted to ease of the fall
You gave me purpose and goals to be set
You even helped me know a love to be met

And then one day, while you were away
A friend you did share with came calling that day
They were a true friend, who sat full of dread
They couldn't hold back the lies that you spread

While smiling to me, you were planning this day
You lied and misled me to get your own way
You set me up, my first love had enough
By planning an ambush that was callous and rough

But I remained faithful, and loyal and true
Your plan it had backfired and now came at you
So schemes were re-hatched to cause me to fall
You told him the child was not his at all

You used your own love to lie of that fact
You even used others to confirm of the act
You stood there before me and comforted me close
With a knife in my back while pointing at my bros

If it weren't for your friend who called on that day
I still would have believed you in whatever you'd say
But heavy they were of your schemes and deceit
They had found out their man was one you did treat

Hurt an dejected they shared what you did
And then left the country so shame faced they hid
And still you did stand there so innocent pure
filled with charm so eloquent and demure

And so with resolve, I ended our ties
I knew that one day you'd get caught by your lies
My child and I found a new life so good
while you lost everything, no friend by you stood

Today it is seen to all who do believe
the child with no father, its him they can see
Her beauty of heart and soul they admire
While her looks, no mistake, they're of her father

(This was a situation that took place many years ago, but today there is no more animosity. I wrote this just to share of an experience once had, and one where forgivenness has made me a better person for it)
