Birthday Cake Poem by Paula Glynn

Birthday Cake

Blow out your birthday candles,
And make a wish,
For an orange bright future,
Where you having been born,
Makes this world a better place,
Every year another candle,
Being added to your birthday cake,
The years rolling by,
Without your help,
And your body grows old and changes.

Your birthday cake last year,
Was a rich chocolate affair,
And your red wine tasted,
All the sweeter,
Celebrating another year,
Of your busy, turbulent life,
Every day a drama,
Every day something happening,
For this world is full of people,
People working nine to five,
And congregating in clubs and pubs.

Every year has its seasons,
Spring where you celebrate Easter,
Summer where you have picnics,
Autumn where leaves fall off trees,
And turn the world yellow, brown and gold,
And winter with Christmas,
And all the exciting events,

Your birthday comes around quickly,
Time never going backwards,
And you grow happier,
With each passing year,
For you have lost your fears,
You are real and you are here,
No matter the time that passes,
So drink that tipple,
And enjoy your slice of birthday cake,

Whether the cake is decadent chocolate,
Victoria sponge, strawberries and cream,
Coffee and walnut, lemon drizzle,
All poured with rich cream and sweet,
Thick sponge that tastes divine,
For this is your birthday, your life,
Your happiness and your time.
