Chess Poem 01

Rating: 5.0

O thou, whose cynic sneers express
The censure of our favorite chess,
Know that its skill is science' self,
Its play distraction from distress.
It soothes the ancient lover's care,
It counsels warriors in their art,
When dangers threat and perils press:
And yields us, when we need them most,
Companions in our loneliness.

- - Ibn Al-Mutazz, circa 1040

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Note: This poem was not written by me, as you can plainly see, but I like it so much (since I love to play chess) that I wanted to share it with everyone. I found it in the book Master Pieces by Gareth Williams. The book is about different styles and types of chess pieces throughout the years and has some fascinating facts in it.

The poem was written almost a thousand years ago.
