Coffee Conundrum Poem by Smoky Hoss

Coffee Conundrum

I sometimes wonder,
does coffee help
or hurt?
Occasionally, after drinking a cup
I feel quite tired.
Cowboys drink hard, black coffee
sitting around the campfire
just prior to calling it a night;
do they sleep well?
Well, one would think so,
after all the nights, seasons, years,
and they stick to their routine,
either it does help to fall asleep
(as it seems often to do for me)
or they are complete idiots
(I've more than a few times entertained this thought of myself) .
But, if thus be the case for Cowboys,
why then do they, and we,
drink java each new morning
to, allegedly, revive us, invigorate and enliven us?
Perhaps we are all, after all, addicted
idiots, Cowboy conundrums, caffeine cravers.
There just may be a metaphorical meaning
deep down in the bottom of the cup to all of this.
Hmmm....
I do believe
I'll pour myself another mug of joe
and see if I can get to the bottom of it,
one of life's maligned mysteries,
the case of the coffee conundrum...

i laughed reading this, smoky. and once again you've touched on something current in my life. i was a coffee drinker for the last twenty years or so. generally one mug in the morning—black, no sweetener. then less than a month ago i got to reading on the benefits of cacao. so i switched. it has some caffeine but not like coffee.(i had a mild headache the first two days without coffee.) important for me is that it's not a diuretic like java; i like not having to pee as much. blessings! -glen
