Debtor Poem by Kayode Are

Debtor

Tomorrow has to pay
For the pain I feel today
Reeling from the torment of yesterday
A place where duplicity pays

Cheated by wily unrelenting crooks
A well-placed stud across the track
Moments before breasting the tape
Seemed a sure winner then made to lose

The ill-wind is today too strong
Best to stoop in humble gait as it swings
Laying nebulous hope astride tomorrow's brow
Sprout of a payback which fund never grows

Was is that long we banked on yesterday?
Toiling as we scrounged to enhance today
Foraging for riches in muck as burdens grew
A deficit of expectation debited to tomorrow

If you see me at noon tomorrow break bounds
It is for the leanness of pale yesterday
Crafty, corpulent and callous like our chiefs
It is for the debt of today's meagreness
