Freedom At Last Poem by Mehta Hasmukh Amathaal

Freedom At Last

Rating: 4.7

Many years have been passed since we gained independence
It was not solitary case or mere simple incidence
It had come to end after centuries of subjugation
And achieved after prolonged struggle for status elevation

It is dram come true from slave country to a sovereign state
Finally sealing of billions of people’s aspirations and fate
Joy and cheers for whole of county and to breathe free air
With complete resolve to take on millions with care

Soon country may have a sigh of relief from foreign rule
The feeling was running high with addition of rumors and fuels
We were going to be master of our own destiny
A role entrusted to new occupants but desired by many

What we find today after freedom struggle?
Has it brought any material change with troubles?
Are we in real sense free and move without fear?
Has it not added more woes and agony to bear?

Nothing has changed in our own homeland
We are homeless and alien in our own land
No roof on our top and illiteracy rate very high
We are left alone to fate as high and dry

The gulf has been widened and poor are made to suffer
We have shown them day light dreams but have nothing to offer
Ordinary man can not have two square meals a day
Our dreams are shattered and hopes are dashed away

Farmers commit suicide and uniform people are gunned down
Law and orders is nobody’s concern and certainly well known
People were never dejected even under occupation forces
Today we have nothing but fear, deaths and only remorse

Still we are better than those dying daily praying in holy places
Whom to pray and whom to trust rather than feeling pity for races?
What a mosque or what a church to go in for asking peace!
The sentiments are at low ebb and human relation on freeze

If this is what it goes by definition then we may desire tyranny
At least democracy is not misunderstood and looks funny
Country’s wealth is cornered and sent abroad for future use
Country is burning at home and no means available to defuse

Poor Phraser 2012.01.04 17: 09 You illustrate the happiness and sadness of being in charge of one's own destiny. There is no utopia, it seems. Reply
