George it's been a few months since
you're gone and
of course we know that someday I'll also
be gone
I've been on this rocker,
thinking that perhaps 'gone'
is a little like this porch where you and
I used to sit summer evenings to
discuss finer points of
things like these
well nurtured tomato plants and
the most wondrous shape of
Miss Annie's breasts and
various other nature topics, how we
cracked open cold brew and
reminisced about youth like the time
we waited for the lifeguards to
go home and lived our dare to swim the longest length of the lake
even though we had never swam any further than the dock
and our parents so mortified that we could have drowned, but
then again, I would have learned a long time ago what it's like to
be gone
