Ghunghuti Poem by Kumarmani Mahakul

Ghunghuti

Rating: 5.0

Ghunghuti is a word in Sambalpuri language
This is a noun used as both singular and plural,
Very small flies basically fruit flies
Which are gnats and fungus gnats,
These are referred as ghunghuti!
They are very small black or brown flying insects
They fly around windows and potted plants,
When any fruit or vegetable is rotten
And when fungus grows and remained for long
And the dirt is not washed away,
Then out of such fungus each gnat takes birth,
When the body of gnat is manufactured by nature,
A soul drives this and very small fly flies around.

Due to fungi many such small flies take birth
When they fly sometimes they are visible
And sometimes they are not visible too,
But they fly in mass and produce sound,
Their mass berhaviour totally amazes us,
Near fire they do not go at all and fear,
When you point your any finger towards them
They fly away from their position,
They think about their safety and security!

Such gnats love to suck the fresh juice
From fresh fruits and vegetables,
Where they sit, there fungi grow soon,
They love more pumpkin and cauliflower,
Even they stick for hours and suck juice,
They are very sensitive and they sing together,
Although their singing is not audible to us
Still we can hear it in deep silence
As their sweet tune is produced in very fine wave,
They swing in pair, dance and run,
If carefully you will observe you will notice,
Observing them very carefully in love,
We notice their organizational behaviour!

They live happily in own community
Although they get their lives for short time,
But they are wonderful in God's creation,
Every ghunghuti has own dream to materialize,
Ghunghuti are very clever and soon they fly.

they're worldwide, KM; thanks for the new name I can call them. They love a drop of wine, too; and the way they flee your finger and sing makes them the bird of the insect world.

Ghunghuti, what profoundly minute but accurate observations. Even they have a dream. Well writ.

This is an amazement for me to know and learn about new words from you. Ghunghuti word is easy to remember and this is completely new to me. I agree with Douglas Scotney. These fruit flies are seen world wide. Your keen observation has brought them alive in your poem.

This is an amazing verse, Kumarmani. I read this as a metaphor for humanity. We are like those flies, when we understand out station in the whole of the cosmos. May our communities be survived as 'happily.' This gem goes to myfavourites.
