Plums are in bud, red dots on the bough,
Hooves of the spring are heard, distinct now.
The excelling Nature made you and your cat,
You, fairer than Snow, and her, like Night.

Plums are in bud, red dots on the bough,
Bidding farewell to the old year;
Hooves of the spring are heard, distinct now,
Ushering in the new Horse Year.

Heaven excels anew at His craft,
Abashing mortals' artifice:
He made thee, fairer than the Snow,
And thy cat, Hsiao Dai, a dark glow.
