Greed Poem by Galina Italyanskaya

Greed

Rating: 4.3

Catch the sun
And lock into the cell
To offer it for sale…
Guy, you're still not happy.

Make a sound,
Declare: ‘It is mine,
So you can buy it here,
But do not dare to copy! '

Let your thought
Be signed as solely yours,
Certificated, patented
To fill your bank account.

You forgot,
If you have ever known,
Guy, what you really own
Is what you care about.

One can swear
The land belongs to him,
And he can build his firm,
He has all needed papers.

He's a liar.
He only takes and leaves
Polluted air and rivers,
Exhausted soil and people.

When your heart
Looks for another heart,
It tries to reach the stars,
It sings to someone dear.

Does it hurt,
If songs are spread for free?
Is that your only creed
To sell and never share?

Tell me if
It came across your mind:
Your greed would make you blind,
Your greed would make you poor.

You believe
That wealth is worth your soul.
Thus you will mute its song
For sure.

I've read many Russian poems in the four-line stanza (Pasternak, Blok, Tsvetaeva, et al.) and it is so well suited to develop a poetic argument as you do here. Your images and ideas both flow with such ease and emphasis in this poem. // Your poem develops a very clear MORAL argument; there is no way the people you are addressing can squirm out of their guilt. It's too obvious after you made your case that they have put personal profit over all humane issues and are willing to ravage the earth for their gain. Your poem shows the loneliness of a greedy person. The key line is YOU BELIEVE THAT WEALTH IS WORTH YOUR SOUL..That is a golden message to my mind. You cannot make a more eloquent argument to changr their behavior to the good, the altruistic.

Thank you so much, Daniel, for your profound comment) Though you know me, I don't like to blame, much more I like to observe and search for the reasons and their consequenses. I didn't want to blame. In my opinion greed is sooner a problem to solve than a sin to punish. And I wish people would cling to good words a bit less. Altruistic is a good word, but it's not absolute. For example people often think that giving money to the poor is very good, gracious and altruistic, and some inventive persons steal babies and gave them drug injections and use them for begging more money, because people have more pity for a woman with a baby than just for a woman. So the criminals get all the money while babies die. Altruism isn't a simple matter. And maybe that's one of the reasons why I believe that money is overvalued.
