I Love You, A Turkish Poem By Nazim Hikmet Into English Translation

Rating: 5.0

I love you
Like rushing to a bakery to eat the fresh bread
Like waking up in a burning house at night
Like drinking gushing water from a hose at my mouth
Like opening a mail package not knowing what's in it
Being careful, joyful, suspicious
I love you like sailing on the sea for the first time
Like eating soft candy in Istanbul
Like my body is in agitation.
I love you fiercely and say this -
My goodness, am I still alive loving you?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
the original poem in Turkish

Seviyorum seni
ekmeği tuza banıp yer gibi
Geceleyin ateşler içinde uyanarak
ağzımı dayayıp musluğa su içer gibi
Ağır posta paketini
neyin nesi belirsiz
telaşlı, sevinçli, kuşkulu açar gibi
Seviyorum seni
denizi ilk defa uçakla geçer gibi
İstanbul'da yumuşacık kararırken ortalık
içimde kımıldayan birşeyler gibi
Seviyorum seni
Yaşıyoruz çok şükür der gibi.

-Nazim Hikmet

My rendering is from the following literal web translation:

I love you
like the place where the bread
Waking up in the fire in the night
as if to hold my mouth and drink water in the tap
Heavy mail package
what does not matter
fussy, joyful, suspicious
I love you
like the first time the sea
The soft candy in Istanbul
like something moving inside me
I love you
It's like saying thank good we're alive.

I think, some important point is missing in translation. It can translate better
