Internet Connection Poem by Tom Billsborough

Internet Connection

Rating: 5.0

A kiss, a hug a gentle touch
So little and yet so much
To.make you truly real.
You wrote, I wrote
But only with blind words
We sought each other's soul.
A tentative romance,
A disembodied dance
A dream of love unfurled
Beyond the tactile world
So bound to fail,
It's substance just Soliloquies
Mistaken for deep harmonies.
Mere whisperings of ghosts
Across the infinity of space.
But now I touch your face
I need no words to exorcise those dreams
which die like yesterday
Upon the midnight hour.
One touch and you appear
And in my arms you stay
A vibrant, and a gentle being.

This is so lovely, Tom. You give a certain heat to the internet love between two lonely people and give it such yearning possibilities and then you interject the truth of the matter: Beyond the tactile world So bound to fail, It's substance just Soliloquies Mistaken for deep harmonies. Mere whisperings of ghosts Across the infinity of space.- - - - my heart sighed in disappointment. I hoped the two lovers would find a way.... now may I use the reader's license to fill in the blanks? Cuz then I would read the next lines to say they found a way to physically be together and now heart and soul they fit together and they dream happily ever after. And even if reality wins, this is a beautiful love poem that I am putting on my fav list to read again and again and again! 10+

I shall forward your reader's Licence in triplicate. You are quite right in this case. The couple did finally meet after about two years and found real love and married. They live abroad now but I keep in touch and they are still happy! sometimes it doesn't work out but it must be a great feeling when your hopes are confirmed in this way. I would think Internet dating does give one the chance to explore mutual interests. though obviously it does have its dangers.

A modern day romance...where two people find an intense bond without the involvement of their physical bodies (a disembodies dance) . it's all over the internet and the only way to connect is through written communication. There are some good lines in there...soliloquies mistaken for two-way communication. The interesting part here is how the dreaming world brings the 'ghosts' together. This is the world where bodes are not needed to find the vibrant and gentle being. This is a pretty poem, but there is some disturbing commentary in there. I sometimes wonder how people can fall so intensely in love having never met...and I think there are some good reasons for that touched on by you in this poem: 1) You get to express yourself clearly and your 'partner' has time and opportunity to fully listen and respond to you because of the asynchronous communication; 2) I think one is falling in love with an 'idea' of a person they haven't actually seen....and those one way soliloquies can fool the speaker in to thinking that someone really gets them, when really, they're just falling in love with themselves.... thanks for sharing Tom.

Hi Pam, Yes, I must say it has been a puzzle to me to know how people could fall in love over the Internet. I'm very much a touch person myself and it would be impossible for me. I suppose the danger is falling in love with the image you have created. Perhaps there is something Narcissistic in it too. Falling in love at first sight, I do understand and plead guilty to that with my wife! It's only when you meet that the real instincts take over. Well, that's my belief anyway.
