Jack Kerouac's Coat Poem by LeeAnn Azzopardi

Jack Kerouac's Coat

Rating: 5.0

As I am employed by some rich actor
I am often left to clean after him
Sometimes, I wander through the house
And live vicariously throug my employer's daily life
I knew about the coat but never saw until one day
Putting away the dry cleaning
It was hanging in the closet in its wrapping
As I peeled the plastic enough to put
My hand to touch the coat
I touched the mid-century fabric
And only imagine the cold day in New England or New York
Where he would wear it
Only if I I had the riches, to buy and donate
It to Beat Museum
And writing it off on my taxes

This really brings back memories. I once knew someone who had Rod Steiger's coat. The actor gave it as a gift to the person, a personal assiistant for some time. I've always thought that jacket should make its way to a museum.
