Jayadeva's Geeta Govinda - A Love Song 17 Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Jayadeva's Geeta Govinda - A Love Song 17

Torn by the piercing arrows of Kamadeva, Radha spent a restless night filled with apprehension. Krishna arrives in the morning and bows down to her. He begins to speak in sweet seductive words. But Radha remains unruffled. The resentment towards other Gopis, who flirted with Krishna, still burns strongly in her heart. Knowing fully well that he has come after spending his time with these other women, she admonishes Krishna for his misdeeds. Pointing out to the tell tale marks on his face and body, Radha is a Khandita Nayika, complaining and reprimanding:

Your eyes, reveal it all!
They are still red, tired and drowsy.
It is evident that you spent the night with that other woman!
O Madhava! Keshava! Go away!
Do not tell lies. Go to her, the one who gratifies you most!

Your red lips have turned black
Having kissed her eyes lined with black kohl.
Your body expresses love's subtle moods.
O Madhava! Keshava! Go away!
Do not tell lies. Go to her, the one who gratifies you most!

Marked with signs of nail marks,
Your body, like blue Sapphires,
Has designs of gold etched on them.
O Madhava! Keshava! Go away!
Do not tell lies. Go to her, the one who gratifies you most!

The beautiful feet enriched with red paint
Imprint your chest,
A proof of your game of love
Sprouting profusely from the tree of desire!
O Madhava! Keshava! Go away!
Do not tell lies. Go to her, the one who gratifies you most!

The teeth marks on your delectable lips,
Alas! Makes my heart wince with pain!
Why do I still long for a union with you?
O Madhava! Keshava! Go away!
Do not tell lies. Go to her, the one who gratifies you most!

How can you deceive me this way?
Your pitiless heart must be darker than your black skin.
Especially, when I am excessively in love with you!
O Madhava! Keshava! Go away!
Do not tell lies. Go to her, the one who gratifies you most!

Your sojourn in the forest is but a ruse,
You excel in enticing vulnerable maidens.
But why am I shocked? Are you not the one who killed Pootana?
O Madhava! Keshava! Go away!
Do not tell lies. Go to her, the one who gratifies you most!

Jayadeva sings this song of Radha,
Who is envious and possessive,
But adores her Keshava
With overwhelming passion and love!
Even the Heavens cannot provide such love,
Brimming with a flavour of the nectar,
Sweeter than the sweetest!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Another Geeta Govinda reception in Assam focused, on the contrary, on Krishna cult. In the 17th and 18th centuries Geeta Govinda became part of the rituals in the Guruvayur temple in Kerala. Here too, Krishna cult dominated to the exclusion of Radha.

A third form of cult developed in Vrindavan, where the ‘yugala' or ‘jugalarupa' is created, i.e where Krishna and Radha are inseparably united.

Ashtapadi is another name for Geeta Govinda in South india. Jayadeva composed all the 24 poems of Geeta Govinda in eight verses. That's why these poems came to be popularly known as Ashtapadis. Ashta means eight and Pada means a verse.

This famed song of Geeta Govinda has been translated by me from Sanskrit to English.
I published this work in the form of a book in 2002. The second Edition was published in 2006 and later, the third edition came out in 2010.
I am now happy to publish it in Poem Hunter for the poetry lovers.
