Knock On Wood Poem by Kewayne Wadley

Knock On Wood

masks hide a lot of things.
a lot of truths, a lot of facades.
They spiral and entwine in patterns
Designed to ward off harm.
we wear them but we deny ourselves
some of life's greatest pleasures.
including that of ourselves.
whether it is a question of confidence.
or the thought of feeling unseen.
I am brave when I wear my mask.
I am fearless, able to conquer the darkest night.
Or run into anything headfirst.
but yet, one thing this mask cannot conceal is the way my heart
throbs and beats against it.
when I see you, what fear lingered, seats it's self by sincerity.
together they wail away. creating a beat that falls in line
with my heart.
one that dances away to thoughts of you.
the one thing this mask cannot conceal.
is the way my eyes pierce yours.
revealing the truth, I thought I hid the entire time
