Last night I held the world
in my arms,
and my heart broke into
a thousands shards,
I cried rivers
and my body ached and shivered,
I gathered up every scrap of pain and grief
and carried it home to the great ocean of silence and peace,
we are not beings in a separate cell,
we are part and parcel of a magnificent star-shell.
Last night I fell asleep with the world in my arms
and today I cry from the depths of my being-
let me die from loving this beautiful world too much,
and forgive me if have hurt you along the way,
but I am just a poor being made of clay.
What a magnificent poem! But magnificent, although a perfect description of your poem's literary stature, is the wrong connotation. This is a poem in great deeds are performed without vanity or egoism. Deeds like this would bring glory to a Homeric hero and that is precisely what the speaker of the poem DOES NOT WANT. He is a laborer in the Fields of the Lord, and he intends all glory to be God's glory. He is rewarded by a Buddhist bodisattva, he helps everyone to heaven before he enters. But the imagery of your poem is feminine, the Mother of Us All, an Intercessor. a figure of mercy.
That was one of those rare poems Daniel that came in a flash after my morning meditation yesterday. I think the last line is key because that's the truth for me. My old monk teacher who is 88 now always told me to carry the world in my heart. He said that was the vocation of a hermit.I lived as a hermit monk in my twenties and thirties. I never felt lonely I felt the world was with me in my hermitage.
very beautiful and touching piece sharing like it..! I love to write as well, have my own poetry so please check my site too :) ! !
Beautiful poem and I too appreciate Edmund's writing. I love how you switch everything around in this poem which signifies that we are all part and parcel of each other, and therefore, or of course, the speaker can cradle the earth in her hands. Well written.

Brilliant write, I feel your pain for loving too much and for your sensitivity of never wanting to hurt anybody in this beautiful world, you bleed for the love you have, it is precious gift of the beauty of your nature!

There is a powerful sense of unity in this poem, a belonging, which I find very moving. I agree with Robert about its fine lyrical quality. Another Norah whizzing off into my favourites!
I notice when I get out of the way the poem flows better. In the zone they call it Tom Always a delight gentleman Tom
