Last Thing Poem by Kewayne Wadley

Last Thing

It is often said that the best things in life are free.
To be honest, the last things in life are often the best.
The moment that you're ready to give up.
The first time you hope never ends.
Often, we spend too much time stuck on the price
That we end up paying, not realizing how often
We ignore the best free feelings.
Pain, the worse that can happen.
A feeling that swells up in the center of our chest.
Often associated with regret, embarrassment.
The why did I's after any situation.
Often after the pain has passed is when
We start to realize how the last things in life
Are often the best.
How much stronger, how much wiser we become.
Whether it stems from a first kiss.
The last piece of food.
Or the adversity we face from being the last in line.
Feeling stupid, like everyone is watching you
Make a fool out of yourself.
It is often said that the best things in life are free.
Once the adversity passes then we can see.
That most things in life only come around once.
The last thought often being what should've been done.
Or what could have been done better.
And you, meeting you was the last thing I expected.
Associating your face with regret before knowing you.
That overwhelming squeeze taking over my chest.
A reminder that not everything is meant to be held on to.
Overthinking the price that I'll end up paying.
Ignoring the best free feelings.
Often after the pain has passed is when
We start to realize how the last things in life
Are often the best.
