Legacies In Songs

Verse 1
Lately I've been trying to channel the source of
My pain my Grand-Father just died of Covid and
The funeral was just yesterday
Finding myself sitting while reminiscing
The things that he would say
Every Christmas Easter practically
Every Holiday he would roast up the
Franks you couldn't take that to the
Bank but just store it into my
Memory bank I'm cinching with every
Thought that I thank think perhaps
I just need a drank drink so much
Pain when I begin to sink can't even
Write a decent poem at the least
I mean geez what do I have to do
To put my mind back at ease
Richie you just need to give yourself some
Time to grieve let the endorphins release

Verse 2
But in the end the cycle only repeats
Writing poems that he would never get to
Read not knowing that input would mean
That much more to me when I'm hit with
Uncertainty just a blanket of security
Reassurance just knowing him there was
Enough insurance for me
Legs to my table so I could fall upon my
Feet some relationships between a grandson
And grandfather runs deeply it becomes truly
Unique that even your parents doesn't
Get to truly see but I'm glad to have
Known him and the man he helped mold me
To be it's through my own father that I
Finally really began to see
Just the extent of his legacy

Verse 3
It's funny how people write about us when we're
Gone not knowing that we've been here all along
While sealing our legacies in songs
Angelou, Shakespeare, Hughes, Frost
Edgar Allen Poe, Neruda, Jessie Pope
I plan to take poetry as far it can go
And Grand-father I won't ever
Let you go just so you know
Our memories will forever be eternal
Our bond will forever be internal
While setting embers upon the
Flames only happiness remains
As I stand at your grave
With a heavy heart and a rose
Just know it's not goodbye just hello

A poem for my Grand-Father
