May Poem by Reva Kern

May

May, lovely May
On the Rhine
In a canoe -
From tall cliffs
Women watch -
All look lovely
As the canoe
Glides through -
The waterside willows
Weep for who?

Flowering orchards froze
In back
The cherry blossoms
Of May fell
Their colors
Like the nails
Of my love
Their faded petals
The colors of
Her eye shadow -

Along the path
Of the riverbank
Gypsies slowly lead
A bear, monkey
A dog
A donkey follows
Pulling a caravan
In the distance
The Rhine vines -
And far off
A fife playing
A regimental tune -

May, lovely May
Ready the ruins
Of ivy
Of orchard vines
Of the rosebushes -
Wind from
Off the Rhine
Shakes the willows
The chattering reeds
The naked flowers
On the vines
