Memory And Forgetfulness Poem by Daniel Brick

Memory And Forgetfulness

Rating: 5.0

Are my memories what I choose
to remember, or is there a mechanism
which regulates what stays and what vanishes?
I hope this resident regulator sleeps
long hours, even whole weeks, so that
my mind can harvest a heap of events
the regulator would factor in
only to his advantage. Have I uncovered a threat?
Does the regulator swagger through my mind and
misuse its freedom? The freedom of the sovereign mind
is bedrock, it is the channel both memory and forgetfulness
maneuver. They become more entangled in each other
they often move in tandem, like a dancing couple
sweeping across the dance floor, and then parting.

There will still be floods, volcanoes, diseases,
but I choose to remember this rapproachement.
Without it, we would live in an Age of Half-Measures Only.

Very interesting poem. Many rhythms of our body are regulated by some inner mechanism. I suppose workings of mind can also be regulated likewise. We may feel threatened by it if it clashes with our own will to remember or to forget as we desire or choose.

daniel, the idea of a regulator mechanism is interesting. why i remember what i remember, why the few memories among the so many, is something i've wondered about. i explore it in my poems " why this memory" and " island chain." -glen

(Part-3) Both memory and forgetfulness are essential for our survival. Many sorrowful things we remember, but gradually they are removed. If we continue to remember them, our life would be one of misery. Likewise happy memories are energy to our health. But unless we come to a practical present that may be less joyous, we will be living in our past only.

(Part-2) - Why do we remember something for life and why we forget some events and people so easily? Is there a regulator to control our free mind to determine what to remember and what to forget.
