Morning In The Tavern Poem by Daniel Brick

Morning In The Tavern

The messenger took up the cup, quaffed the wine,
and called for more.
Every Sufi in the tavern stretched out his empty cup.
When an angel in the morning leads the way,
what else can we do but follow his example?
He tells, without speaking, that today, above and below,
will be a day of drunkenness...
Then he slips away, as we carouse with fresh wine and new poems.
The angel ascending wishes all of God's missions
could be accomplished so easily, with so much time to spare.
Daniel, even the scent of wine intoxicates you,
and, wonder of wonders, five times today you will write a poem!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is the first of five Sufi-inflected poems which I wrote in one marathon session. I immersed myself in a new Penguin anthology of Sufi poetry called ISLAMIC MYSTICAL VERSE (highly recommended new translations) . I doubt this is true in Islamic societies, but in the West this poetry is virtually secular in spirit. It is the web of figurative language that makes the Sufi model so flexible for us. Since this is not Sufi poetry in the primary sense (which Seyyed Hossein Nasr argues is both religious and Islamic) , I call my poems Sufi-inflected. It's an awkward term but it is direct and honest. The last line is a kind of pun: Muslims pray five times a day, so I borrowed that custom, and predicted five poems. After I wrote the fifth poem, I realized the inspiration had fulfilled itself. It was time to withdraw into silence.

Daniel, thank you for your enlightening notes. I am learning much from your writings, and greatly appreciate your work and effort. Like most skills in life, emulation plays an important part, and I am thankful that you have so invested your craft into this site. Thanks again, and great work!

This is interesting, It's such a vivid read. In fact it feels like some lost scene from a movie. I can't quite explain why, but it sits well with me lol. So I'm adding this one to my list ^^ ~Nika

I think this poem is very easy to relate with. Also well written with brevity. Like the use of Daniel.
