Mother's Tears - Poem by Anjula Tilakaratna

First day you left me
With strangers at school
You shed a little tear
Not knowing what the day brings

When you couldn’t buy me
The fancy dress I really wanted
You shed a little tear
For hurting my little heart

In the scolding sun
Wearing your ragged saree
You shed a little tear
When I ignored you with my friends

When I passed my exams
With flying colours
You shed a little tear
You were happy for me

Now I’m all grown up
With a kid or two
I shed a little tear
For the things I did for you
