Music And Soul Poem by Daniel Brick

Music And Soul

Rating: 5.0

Bruno Maderna, Concerto for Oboe
and Orchestra No.2 (1967)

I paid the closest attention to the oboe
in the concerto which concluded
Saturday afternoon's concert. The soloist
was tense as he waited for his solo passages,
but once he began playing those impossibly long
notes, he relaxed into his mastery, and the loosed
tension entered me, making me momentarily one
of the players. All that was surface:
the oboe's sadness was a costume, a disguise
I assumed to become one with the music. Time passed,
music blossomed into a passage of utmost beauty.
these oboe sounds circled around me, entered me
through an open wound I only dimly recalled receiving,
and lodged themselves in my soul, as if native
to that place within. They adopted the deep red color
of my soul, as their tendrils pierced the nearby tissue.
And so it is: my soul enhanced by music is more than
human substance, it partakes of a beauty reflecting
the Eternal. It has happened as I willed it...
And those sad long notes summon dreams
which take the form my soul desires.

How music can permeate into every cell of being, grab your mind and soul, and journey you through the subconscious to an almost astral plane of existence. The oboe reflects his masters skill and summons the desires of the listener and resonates with his spirit. A lovely poem.

OH, this is a wonderful reading of the poem, Simone. And yes music can take us to the astral plane or at least prepare us while we are still in the sensory dimension to ascend there as our future selves.

Another Oboe poem...now I hear your context. I love the Oboe too. It's a challenging instrument to play and the range of the instrument is wonderful. I love both double reed instruments, the oboe and the bassoon. Both are different in terms of range, but both have a wonderful earthy tone to them. This poem speaks to the effect of music on a person when they let it enter their souls...it's truly transformative.

That's it, Pam! It's the power of music to transform us, the Orphic power, the soul-states.
