My Dearest Friends Poem by Francis Duggan

My Dearest Friends

My dearest friends gone from my life forever and in a green and quiet place they lay
And though by many they are now forgotten I fancy I can see them every day
I see them working in the sunlit meadow with two pronged pikes they toss the hay to dry
And wild born bees are busy gathering nectar from the wildflowers and blossoms of July.

My dearest friends the mentors of my childhood my debt to them I never could repay
They loved music and song and dance and Nature and happy memories of them with me stay
Not highly educated still quite cultured people they could tell what bird it was just by his song
To the ways of Nature they were well acquainted and their bond to Nature to the end was strong.

My dearest friends I feel they are still with me the lessons they left with me I retain
Whenever I'm in need of inspiration their spirits come to visit me again
I feel that I am much better off for knowing them and the World's loss is surely Heaven's gain
And though they have left the old Townland forever fond memories of them with me still remain.

My dearest friends are now with the departed the reaper claimed them as he will claim me
And knowing them made me a better person I loved them for their generosity
They never had the chance to go to college but in the book of life they earnt their degree
And they loved music, song and dance and poetry and they had wisdom and integrity.
