My Inner Voice Poem by Paula Glynn

I search for the hero inside myself
A subject many songs sing about
Wanting to get angry, fight, be aggressive
Scream and shout until it all comes out

I don't want to be the victim:
I want my inner voice to dominate
I want to stand up for my rights
I want to get the facts right and fight

I don't need others problems
Dragging me down to the ground
I want my inner voice to make a sound:
Of joyous celebration and amazing self confidence

I read so many nostalgic novels
The female characters starting out suffering and poor
But life changing events occur and ultimately change her
Life changing her perception of strangers she does encounter

Whether the book set in 1900's to the 21st century
All characters go through trials and tribulations
Learning to navigate the world and all its problems
Learning to find soul deep self confidence

Happiness perhaps a myth:
I do not know, yet I reap what I sow
I know what I know
I watch the love inside of me grow

I am searching, guided by my inner voice
I look to the world knowing I must exist
It was necessary for me to be born
And that when it comes to my rights I must insist

I know life will never stop - life finds a way -
But that does not mean I must let others have their way
I am finding my own yellow brick road to follow
I am creating my own magical fairytale

I may - luckily - not be the size of a whale
But on love's rocky waves I do sail
The deep blue sea enchanting me
Its waves sometimes deceptively calm and blue

My wise inner voice leaving me no choice
That does make me push with much force
For in any room I will never be ignored
I will never live my life empty or bored

Wisdom provided by inevitable time
Passion making lovers limbs entwine
For life is truly, madly, deeply mine
Where this life is deliberately made a happier time.
