My Mistake - Poem by wendy martinez

Within the hour of meeting your acquaintance, my heart had already begun to tap and sputter louder than ever before. The words that flowed across your tongue poured through my ears and caused my skin to shiver. The chill of the night made your company all the more lovely. Inside the dark passageway, I smoothly made my way towards your warm smile. Inching myself closer and closer to your warm hand, I gently run my fingers down your hand and place them perfectly between yours. You turn and flash me with a brilliant smile. Regaining my ability to talk, I sputter out what my heart had been aching to say since the night began. I questioned what you were longing to do at the moment that appeared before us. You answered with hesitation, yet you told me what you really needed to say. I knew we were right for each other when I discovered we were having thoughts about the same particular fantasy. Trying to find a relief, we sank ourselves into the corner of the darkness and let our lips find one another in the cold. When our lips finally part, our hearts are still attached. I miss you, to say the very least. Leaving my heart without yours was a mistake I shall never again make. Thoughts of our love float about in my head, all circling around the way your hand fit sweetly around my waist. I know you loved me, but sadly all I gave you was goodbye. I wish I could be back in your loving embrace once more to be able to tell you just how much I regret letting you slip away. I love you; and I promise to never keep you from my mind as long as I am fit to be in yours. I have not forgotten you my darling, and I hope that as long as you live, you will live it with me.
