Nervous Heartbeat Poem by D.N. Rebb

Nervous Heartbeat

Rating: 5.0

Nervous,
At 3AM, Christmas morning
Who could sleep?
Is Santa real?
Of course he is
I hear the reindeer
On the rooftop
I close my eyes
He can't know I'm awake
I feel my heartbeat

Nervous,
She said yes
Our first date
Going to the movies
Me and my gal
Hopefully, the guys will see us
I will hold her hand
Will she allow me to kiss her?
Mom said, be a gentleman
I feel my heartbeat

Nervous,
First day on the job
Dad got me this work
Told me not to screw it up
Working construction
What do I know about working construction?
Don't want to disappoint him
Never really held a hammer
I feel my heartbeat

Nervous,
Doc says congratulations, it's a girl
Would you like to hold her?
I have a daughter!
She's so tiny
I start to cry
Tell my wife I love her so much
We're a family now
I feel my heartbeat

Nervous,
Time to downsize
A retirement home
The pamphlet lied
They're all old here; I'm not that old
Bingo nights every Tuesday
The food has no taste
Was this a mistake?
I feel no heartbeat

Different stages of life give us different experiences.Going on the first date or joining a job for the first time are days of excitement, but thinking to live in an old age home is one of sadness.

Whoa! The last stanza really hits home! I'm almost old enough, but I hope I never have to go into a retirement home. They are so expensive, and eat up your savings in no time at all. The food is probably not great, either.
