No lantern is cast in the north country hamlet
Nestled before the ever misty swamps and forests
A path leading nowhere is said to exist for passage
No boot stirs the soil, only the hooves of a demon
Picked clean of all souls, a mossy village carcass
If silence is broken by the smallest of squeaks
Or the tiniest hint of a scurrying scrape
Claws swoop, screech and then silence once more
Fleshy beak and steely eyes flash above the town
The moon at last is revealed from this dizzying perch
A mile high flight until the mist surrenders and clears
A winged sentry the vanguard of a dark rolling terror
Brave souls alone, could withstand the demon's evil
Brave and wise to the twisted games of deception
The steadfast fighter is toughest when all seems lost
The demon has no magic to defeat the human spirit
There is a place in each of us that be reached through sheer determination that can give strength
What a dark poem full of so much hope and positive energy! Beautiful imagery expressed with a very positive message. For me personally, I enjoyed reading this today. In the first three stanzas, I was thinking 'sleepy hollow' but in the fourth and final stanza, you pulled the message together. A very expressive write and especially helpful to those who are living in difficult times. Inspirational really. Thanks for sharing Edmund! :)

So true these poetical words of yours. 'The demon had no black magic to defeat the human spirit'. Where there is a will there is always a way and what doesn't kill us makes us stronger as my Dad used to say. At first I was a little at a loss as to where things were going, but then suddenly you pulled everything together making perfect sense. Loved it! Thank you for sharing. RoseAnn
