Poet Of The Month

Rating: 5.0

It was diagnosed as deadly cancer
A disease now common but found with fewer
So much progress has been made in this direction
But patients suffer mental agony with medicine’s reaction
- - -
I could clearly see worry lines on her face
But she won’t allow any body to find its trace
She will be smiling all the time and remain cheerful
As if life was defeated and she was successful

He feels for women folk and is a game for any movement concerning empowerment of women. His happiness comes forth when Malal yusufazai of Pakistan is nominated for Nobel Peace Prize. In his poem ‘ Golden days for all peace lovers’ he writes.: -

Golden day for all peace lovers
Good news we all hear
Malal yusufazai* has been nominated
For the Nobel prize and stands related
- - -
What a tribute to innocent girl?
It would have been her life in turn
The risk she took for eradication
Of the illiteracy to strengthen the education.

His military background might have toughened him mentally and physically but he has a poetic golden heart full of love, compassion, feelings for down trodden and women. His poems speak of hunger and draught and champion the cause of women upliftment & empowerment in the same breath. Upholding values and traditions of our ethos and culture with a touch of patriotism through his extraordinary verses is his forte. He pens image of today’s youth in his poem ‘ Let us build’(excerpts) : -

Such is youth of today
Resolve in mind to find way
Only need little help and care
Rest all they can find and dare
- - - -
I have found them to be honest
Always worried to perform the best
Not concerned with what lies ahead
Yet with strong urge ready to be read

He is undoubtly the best social poet always giving up a wake up call through his poems. He is pained to find a child aborted. In his poem ‘ Abort the child’ aborting a child is strictly no no for him. He vents his feelings through a wife’s angle who is stunned at her husband’s pleas to abort their child. The poet expresses the strong sentiments of a wife in the following few stanzas beautifully in his poem “ Abort the child’ (excerpts) : -

“I shall not be part of inhuman act”
The child is mine and that is open fact
We are jointly responsible for his/her birth
How can we prefer untimely death?
- - -
I was not prepared to rebel against inner voice
Even if there was little left with me as choice
How can we be that cruel to birth of child?
When we had jointly explored the field

All his poems are pleasure to read. His ability to create vivid imagery makes a reader feel the truthfulness of his pen. He does not mince his words while speaking on or for a social cause. One finds 90% of his poems expound either the cause of social good or bringing out the maladies afflicting the society or taking on those who dare to destroy the fabric of our social ethos, culture and country. The scams, politician’s general apathy, rapes and murders, inflation all these factors arouse a disgusting feelings in him and he thunders in one of his poems ‘ O, countrymen’ (excerpts) : -

Hostility still prevails
Many people are killed and mechanism fails
Politicians talk of peace and do nothing
Make life difficult and add fuel for something
- - - - -
Such people deserve only democratic kick
They will not love to be beaten with stick
Yet we are tolerant enough to allow money laundering
Land grabbing, open commission and sharing
- - - -
Beware! They will come to you for votes
Different schemes and promises they will float
The moment election is over
They will talk of power share

He is a family man and loves and adores his wife. Sample these verses from his poem ‘ I liked her’: -

I considered myself lucky person on earth
We had pledged to remain together till the death
Such was bond slowly developing
I was kneed deep in love and eloping
- - - - -
She is by any standard garden flower
Such luck may be had only by lucky fewer
I knew from her movement that she was to be mine
She held all the qualities and best as feminine.

Hasmukh Mehta is a down to earth poet and a romantic too. He cares for the smiling faces and cares for love in pure form. He writes in his poem ‘ Certainly Yes’

Certainly yes
I shall tell you on face
It is not rush for race
It is love in any case
- - - - -

Now will you be my companion?
