Prayer-Rat

Rating: 5.0

Great deity Karni Mata- - - - - - - - -mother of our clan
Why do we live in terror- - - - - -is it part of the plan

We hide during the day- - - - - - -foraging only at night
But lots of care we need- - for the cat's always in sight

Much help it will be- - - - - - - -if our eyes are behind
For when we are feeding- from the back we are quite blind

And better it will be- - - - -if tails we are born without
If by the tail we are caught- - - there is no more way out

But best it will be- - - - - - if we are bigger than a cat
Then that pussy fella- - - - - -no longer will be a threat
Please answer my prayer- - - - this plea from a little rat

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The legend goes that Karni Mata, a mystic matriarch from the 14th century, was an incarnation of Durga, the goddess of power and victory. At some point during her life, the child of one of her clansmen died. She attempted to bring the child back to life, only to be told by Yama, the god of death, that he had already been reincarnated.
Karni Mata cut a deal with Yama: From that point forward, all of her tribespeople would be REBORN AS RATS until they could be born back into the clan.

That would be a terrible incarnation. How terrible to be hunted and tortured by cats, poisoned, or caught in traps. Love the picture of the cute little rat though he really looks like he is seriously praying..lol

Your poems really get me thinking. Challenging really. Interesting story in your notes. So...why would the deal be cut that they would ALL be reborn as rats until they could be born back into the clan...is that so they can remain together? I like the flow of the writing, because all of the pieces progress that rat back into a human in a way! :) (no tail, up at day, and bigger than a cat...but still feeding without eyes in the back of the head...) ..hmmmmm

Thanks again Pam for your comments. I hope you will not read too much into this prayer series, they are just just simple poems and written for a bit of laughter. Nothing serious or profound.

And better it will be- - - - -if tails we are born without If by the tail we are caught- - - there is no more way out Sweet and simple. Yes, the tail is a real disadvantage to the rat!
