Rabbit And The Stoat Poem by Colin Ian Jeffery

Rabbit And The Stoat

Rating: 5.0

Under a hedgerow, rabbit, a doe, pauses
Eyes bright as diamonds, fur grey, bobbing tail.
Early morning dew sparkles on blades of grass
Slight breeze caressing foliage of the trees.
Her kits waiting to be fed deep within a burrow
Hungry to suckle milk, nourished and protected.
Doe sniffs wind for danger, wary of predators.
Vegetarian, she feasts upon grass stems
Satisfied, with nothing to fear, hops away.
Minutes pass and a slender stoat appears
Short legs, long body, beady eyes, grey fur.
Deadly relentless hunter, prey mostly rabbits.
Pauses under a hedgerow smelling the doe
Runs at steady pace following the scent.
