Rear-View Mirror Poem by Kewayne Wadley

Rear-View Mirror

I look in the rear-view mirror.
Waiting.
Driving around.
Looking for something lost.
Just as I am about to drive away.
I see it again.
Immediately I stop the car
And stare.
Afraid to turn around.
In fear that it will disappear again.
The car behind me honks its horn.
Wondering what the holdup is.
I sit there and wait.
Preparing myself to circle around
The block again.
I look in the rear-view mirror.
Returning the same frustrated honk.
The gas hand a quarter towards
Halfway.
Just because things don't work out
The first time around.
Doesn't mean that it cannot
The second, third, or forty-fifth time.
I'll always come back for you.
No matter how long it takes
Your face will always remain the same To me
