The French and Japanese pass laws
To try to keep words out
While wanton English tempts words in
Like some old hooker on History Street.
Guess which language we’ll all be speaking
In the twenty third century.
I liked the cleverness of this poem even if it is a little off the mark, imho. Sure, we'll all be speaking English, but not because self-appointed guardians of other languages try to keep their languages 'pure, ' but because English is the language of Empire.

You might want to read The Meaning of Everything (forgot the author's name) which is the story of the making of the Oxford English Dictionary.) It isn't an exciting read, but your poem reminded me of the way these scholars went about deciding which words to include. Your poem is thought-provoking. Raynette
