Spirit

The balance between left and right
Where guilty extremes grow contrite...
Is the spirit a purple thing?

As the body copes with aging
The veins and skull fill with raging
Is the spirit a purple thing?

If all stained glass ensnares pure love
Fervor, pride belong to faith above
Is the spirit a purple thing?

A warm softness gives forth the rock
And anguish rests upon a block
Is your spirit a purple thing?

Around the neck every Thursday
For the regal head it must stay
Is the spirit a purple thing?

Your mission to calm and to cure
Subverts, mystifies, the allure!
Is the spirit a purple thing?

Favoured by the young and mourning
it bestows a wartime warning
Is the spirit a perfect thing?

you pay attention to the art of writing in so many ways in this great poem. You gave it structure to give it strength. you gave it questions to give it rounds, cycles, and guidance, you gave it rhymes to flow into our hearts. And with these and beyond these you gave us provoking thoughts with which to pursue spirit. 10+++++++++

Thank you Susan...And yes, I did intend " Spirit' to reflect a cycle...strength to weakness, power to weakness, ailment to cure... Many thanks, Susan.

Perfection and balance such a difficult thing to achieve. But there is no peace without realizing some sort of harmony. Pleasure to read this lovely poem again.

We should maintain balance between left and right. Spirit is pure we should feel this. Always we should stay away from conflicts. This excellent poem has beauty within. An amazing poem is excellently penned.

It is unmistakably linked with spirituality. It has also something to do with royalty. You have used words like 'regal, mystical ' etc in the poem. Though I have failed in understanding the symbolism fully, I am sure it has great symbolic depth!

Thank you, Valsa...Yes, I've found that 'purple' seems to have much meaning across cultures. Perhaps it has do with being a rare colour? I don't often run across it. And perhaps purple clothing, purple dye, used to be difficult or dear to create... a tie to royalty?

When I read this poem a second time, I feel that you have used the word 'purple' in a highly symbolic sense. Spirit distinguishes man from all other creatures. So it must be having an ennobling quality and a unique entity. Purple color denotes mysticism, dignity and devotion.

As purple is the most powerful visible wavelength of electromagnetic energy it makes sense why people associate this color with supernatural power or spiritual dynamism. The color purple has had so many diverse symbolism associations from ancient imperialism through to modern opinion of the generational divide. A poem that incites much spiritual thought and question.

Is the spirit a purple or a perfect thing? I liked this, the spirit often so quiet unknown within us, when does it move and exercise force and how, when neglected wither away?
