Sunlight Sweetly Scattered Poem by Bill Galvin

Sunlight Sweetly Scattered

I needed lifting today.

A cold front then moved in with sudden swift sleet,
And a dark cloud was demarcated at the sharp edge of a blue sky.

I was driving into the stormy border line as the sun still shone
At a low angle behind me an hour before setting.
The perfect Natural conditions were being prepared.

Straightaway, a full-arced rainbow colored the clouds before me.
God's graceful gift of Naturalness…
Refracted sun light within water droplets dispersed from red to violet
Fills my windshield in a bow shape, and slows all traffic.
This is not a common occurrence in the Northeast,
So it tends to attract the attention.

We drive into and under the big colorful arch;
And there are drivers pulling over to look in awe,
So as to be able to soak it in and absorb the splendor.
Mothers are pointing fingers to explain to the child
The noteworthiness of this Natural teaching moment.

I know the science, and move forward, anticipating the end;
But, the sun is setting behind me still,
And the rain still falling as the cloud bank moves swiftly on;
And there is another full rainbow; this time, in an open area;
I look to my right and pass the leg of the colored arc
Standing in a field… resplendent… intangible…
An illusory reflection onto the convex lens of my eye… but, real.

I move on, expecting that my good fortune has been sated.
I take a right turn, away from the color, and drive along
Enchanted and awakened by the sights I have just witnessed.
The road through the trees turns, and opens again,
And there to my left is another full-arced rainbow.

Again, I am left breathless by the wondrous Naturalness.

When at last, because I and the storm moved apart,
And all became routinely normal, I realized that
God speaks in unique, blessed tones when we need a lift.
My heart beats with new vigor; my mind's eye is brightened.

Even dark, threatening clouds can unveil a world of color…
A Spiritual Moment… an arc over the gloom…
A bridge between the Sacred and Divine.
