Taking Ownership. Poem by Michael Walker

Taking Ownership.

('Imagine all the people/ sharing all the world.` 'Imagine.`
John Lennon.)

In my city, there are friendly shopkeepers,
some of whom read the Koran at work,
and arefair and even complimentary to customers.
There are sales and discounts everywhere you look.

It is a different story in real estate, either
renting an apartment or buying a house.
'Market rents' mean high rents; only once has there been a rent freeze in New Zealand.

Tenants want a real home not a temporary one
but it is not easyto save for a deposit.
The wealthy profit from free-market rents,
which always work in their favour.

The words 'landlord' and 'tenant'
remind me of the Middle Ages.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This has been my experience of renting apartments in Auckland, before buying a stand-alone house, a real home. Other towns have a lower cost of living, lower rents and cheaper houses. I think it is a basic human need to have a permanent home, yet many people are denied this. I liked John Lennon's song ' Imagine' from the very first time I heard it.

It is written from the point of view of a tenant-not easy. Thanks.
