The Baseball Bat Poem by Raj Dronamraju

The Baseball Bat

I bought a baseball bat which I keep behind my bedroom door
A house in the next block was burglarized and home invasion paranoia set in
I also carry the baseball bat when I go for walks very early in the morning at five AM
As there are stray dogs and they sometimes will growl and approach you with inexplicable hostility
A few taps on the street with the bat are usually enough to discourage a hostile canine
Sometimes a quick blow to the backside or a leg if they get too close

I have never liked the game of baseball nor American football
Too much stopping and starting, too much standing around
Continual movement is force and energy and the positive generation of such
Like someone riding a stationary bicycle or running on a treadmill to generate power for a battery
I will keep secure the treasured wealth of this life
What I must hoard, I must protect
The owner of a self, of a place goes forth to do battle or waits for the battle to come to him
