The Battle Of Gardenloo Poem by Susan Williams

The Battle Of Gardenloo

Rating: 5.0

.
It was a heroic battle
history will attest to that.
There was bravery and there was loss of life
that will not soon be forgot.
I woke before dawn
and put on my armor in the half-light.
I picked up my knife and shoved it into its sheath
hanging from my wide leather belt
and I picked up my special eye shield
to protect me from the blinding blazing sun.
I knelt on my knees
and I prayed and I prayed for victory
but I soon began to sweat.
I knew I was outnumbered and would be beset on all sides
but duty called and I must answer
so I did what a good soldier must do.
I got up off my knees and answered the call.
Waving goodbye to all I love and hold dear.
I marched out to the battlefield
where I met the opposing forces that ranged all around me
with nothing but a hoe in one hand and a rake in the other.
Though they were well-entrenched,
the weeds fell and I took no prisoners.
By evening I had killed them all- -
MAHAHAHA! !
and won single-handed the Battle of Gardenloo.

Had to revisit this great poem today, Susan. I was fighting the battle most of the afternoon. Went into the campaign feeling like Wellington, left like Napoleon. There's always tomorrow!

I shall continue responding to comments on my poems- it's what I do- - my Momma raised a polite girl!

(cont.) single-handed vs. single-handedly? it is six of one and half a dozen of another*** ....as far as which one a person/poet uses. i found in one Google source that British English tends more towards single-handed than American English does. BUT WHY, you may ask, am i bothering with such stuff? the 'devil makes me do it'! ! ! *** meaning: The alternatives are the same, i.e. both are ok with Bri! to MyPoemList. bri ;)

single-handedly would have sent that line into a bumpy ride so I shall stick to poetic when writing a poem or striving to write one... thank you for placing on your fav list

(cont.) i enjoyed alliteration blinding blazing. technically, you would not have knelt (past tense of kneel) on any body part OTHER THAN your knee or knees, but it's ok; i do stuff like that in poems sometimes: state the obvious. sweat/beset works nicely for me. Talk of melodrama! ! ! i 'love' these lines, more than the others; is it possible? ? : Waving goodbye to all I love and hold dear. I marched out to the battlefield (cont.)

congratulations! ! ! you are right... one doesn't have to state the obvious such as knelt on my knees BUT it rolls poetic so I shall continue in my perverse style, rebel that I am

(cont.) for readers not informed of European history: Waterloo, Battle of. A battle in Belgium in 1815 in which the British and Prussians defeated the French under Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon abdicated as emperor a few days after this final defeat, and a few weeks later he was captured and sent into exile. ... :) i watched the reenactment on Toute l'Histoire, but i don't understand French, so.... [and i lie sometimes; this whole sentence is a bunch of lies! ]. (cont.)

I am guessing 99.9% of the PH members know what the Battle of Waterloo is
