The Candle Poem by Nosheen Irfan

The Candle

Rating: 4.3

The candle was melting into wax
Slowly, slowly burning to a new life
The faint flicker trembled
At every gust of wind
And revived again
When the wind dropped down to a whisper

The darkness was dimmed by the tiny flicker
Fighting for its life against the rogue wind
That stole into the sleepy room
In connivance with half-shuttered window

Steady a moment
Wavering the next
The flicker rose and fell
To the beat of the wind

The candle was half its size
When the wind struck with might
The flicker swayed but regained its strength
As the candle collapsed on its side.

A candle provides light by burning itself like a soldier provides wisdom by sacrificing his life. It is really a gorgeous poem based on metaphor having touching expression with great theme. Well envisioned. Thanks for sharing.10

I was inspired by this poem to write a poem that is entitled, A Candlelight at Midnight. But the truth is that I loved the first and the last stanzas more than I did the second and the third. This is because I found the first stanza full of movement and emotional strength due to the visual images of the melting wax, the flickering flame and the wind. The beauty of the first stanza almost fades in the second stanza because of dipicting the wind as 'rouge', which is something I consider to be very traditional, sentimental and unpoetic. As for the third stanza, it adds nothing to the overall effect of the poem. Thank you for sharing this poem with us. Please, have a look on my aforementioned poem and feel free to comment on it.
