He is alone,
But not lonely
Remains unknown
Solo, mostly
He is a drifter
No target in mind
Shelters in winter
The rest remains blind
Seen more of this country
Than any man alive
By the stars he lives free
With fresh air he survives
Carries a walking stick wherever he goes
And a smile that radiates true friendliness
A backpack filled with meal utensils n' clothes
The stand-alone thing he doesn't carry, stress
Not afraid to work for hearty dinners
Or perhaps a spot to crash for the night
There aren't many places though he lingers
And grabs his stuff in the morn', then takes flight
Hitched his way right across this continent
And has fished in all three silent shore sights
When hunger strikes, he's been known to hare-hunt
And seldom takes the same roadway twice
Leaves behind broken hearts in many towns
Ladies just adore his silent darkness
Cry as he blurs into the distant clouds
Waving good-bye's not part of his process
He remains alone,
But never lonely
Wants to stay unknown
Real loner, mostly
He'll always be a drifter
And have no target in mind
Finds shelter in the winter
Other seasons remain blind
Remarkable poem on a very non-poetic subject. Very well writtten and complete. You made interesting and gave depth and compassion to an individual, mostly rejected by society. A laudable and kind feat

He may be a fictitious character, but I know someone that matches him precisely. In fact, I'm gonna share this poem with him. Great work, D.N.!
