The Road Map Of A Relationship Poem by Denis Mair

The Road Map Of A Relationship

Rating: 5.0

The linguist George Lakoff says that seeing a relationship as a journey is an extended metaphor.

We like feeding the metaphorical beast because we think that is the 'route' to understanding things.

All the joys and tribulations between two parties get mapped onto a road map.

It's strange how our minds itch to cruise down a four-lane highway, until poor maintenance results in a three-day layover in a two-bit town.

Of course in real life relationships, destinations often explode before we get to them.

Cinematic longeurs on a road trip may only be a product of poor script writing.

So how about finding a neglected clue instead?

Maybe that will enable me to see, in a flash of vision, how a hypothetical spider tied this whole web together.

It would be like throwing a grain of salt into a super-saturated swizzle of notions,

Then I could peer at two figurines embracing inside a crystal cabinet...

Oh my, there I go again.

The roadmap of a relationship is beautifully depicted in a metaphorical style. I really enjoyed all the similar situations. Top Marks and to my Favourites

I like this piece a lot - the interrogation of memories that we all do when looking back. Our brains are wired to find connections.
